LEAF: Lutherans, Episcopalians and Friends

About

Lutherans, Episcopalians, and Friends (LEAF) provides a welcoming and inclusive community to all Elon students. We gather as a community weekly to get coffee and support each other in different ways. We also have the opportunity to worship together weekly, meeting every Sunday in the Sacred Space of the Numen Lumen Pavilion at 4:30pm, with a separate, homemade dinner at 5:30pm in the McBride Gathering Space. LEAF lives out our welcoming values and invites people to join us for events or dinner without expectations of joining us for worship. Our doors and hearts are always open and all are welcome regardless of previous or current religious beliefs.

We are an open and affirming community. We strive to love our neighbors as ourselves and respect the value and dignity of every person regardless of race, creed, gender, sexuality, or faith tradition.

Our foundation is as followers of Jesus Christ, who believe in God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Whether you have been a member of a church for years, are beginning to explore your relationship with spirituality or faith, or are just looking for a place to find new friends and ask difficult questions - a believer, doubter, seeker, or skeptic - all are welcome in the LEAF community!

Our worship incorporates ancient structures and traditions of the Lutheran and Episcopal churches, and we are proud to create a place for ecumenical Christian worship each week. We come together to sing songs of praise, listen to scripture, hear reflections from our peers and mentors, offer prayers, and share communion.

Communion, in our tradition, is also referred to as the Holy Eucharist. It is a meal of bread and wine, and for Christians, this practice nourishes us to go out into the world to act as Jesus’ disciples. All are welcome to receive communion.

We are rooted in Scripture and strive to live out the Good News of Jesus Christ with open minds and loving hearts as proclaimed in the gospels. When reading Scripture, we look at the historical context and understand the Bible to be the inspired word of God, written and transcribed by many authors. Holy Scripture is the record of the drama of God's saving care of creation throughout the course of history.

Our faith gives us the freedom and the courage to question, wonder, discover and boldly participate in what God is doing in the world today.

We recognize that we are called to act as Jesus’ hands and feet in the world, caring for God’s creation, striving for peace and justice, and sharing God’s love among all people.

If you would like to know our diverse thoughts and beliefs around a variety of 21st century questions, we welcome the opportunity to talk more with you in a truly safe, non-judgemental environment.
